Development of new line of patient care/clinic: Rush Breast Reconstruction Practice

As Chief of Breast Reconstruction, I was responsible for elevating Rush into a leader in Breast Reconstructive Services in the highly competitive greater Chicagoland area, a geographical area encompassing over three million people, with a long-term goal of simultaneously expanding the regional and national recognition of Rush Breast Reconstruction. As an initial endeavor, I created a strategic business plan, with the goals of growth and acquisition of key stakeholders that elevate Breast Reconstruction at Rush. Drawing from greater than fifteen years of experience in the field, knowledge obtained during my Executive MBA at the Kellogg School of Management, and a MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health, I identified potential for Breast Reconstruction growth by focusing on and leveraging patient outcomes, overall quality, financial growth, and healthcare partnerships in the breast cancer space.

As part of Breast Reconstruction strategic expansion, I’ve helped recruit and maintain talented surgeon faculty and expanded breast reconstruction services at six satellite locations. In addition, I’ve partnered with Financial Services / Revenue Cycle to accelerate revenue with better carve outs and financial contracting for higher complexity reconstructive services. I partnered with marketing to identify and implement messaging that facilitates patient entry into the system while providing an enhanced understanding of the unique services offered by Rush in the Chicagoland area as a strategy to enhance brand recognition. This includes my involvement in the development of interprofessional, global, multicultural and community service curriculum.

Previously, breast reconstruction services at Rush were fragmented and inconsistent. Recognizing this, I prioritized reorganizing the service into one comprehensive Breast Reconstruction program with expanded microsurgical reconstruction services, implementation of Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) pathways, establishment of research protocols, outcomes-based research initiatives, a donor-directed Fund in the Office of Philanthropy, and the organization and sponsorship of various fundraising activities to support the Rush Breast Reconstruction programs and foster Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) activities in the Chicagoland area, including our most recent event featuring Dana Carvey in conjunction with the American Association of Plastic Surgeons. Our efforts involved in several multisite industry sponsored trials and consistently publishing in leading journals. Our volume grew from one of the lowest in Chicago to #2 in the Chicagoland area. We have been featured on nationally syndicated media outlets and magazines.
