The term "Mommy Makeover" gets thrown around a lot. On social media, in magazines, in hushed conversations between friends. But what it actually involves, what recovery really looks like, and whether it might be right for you, is a conversation that deserves more than a trending hashtag.
I have performed countless Mommy Makeovers over my 20+ years as a board-certified plastic surgeon. And in that time, I have noticed that the questions women are most afraid to ask are almost always the most important ones. So let me answer them here, honestly.
A Mommy Makeover is not a single procedure. It is a customized combination of surgical treatments designed to address the physical changes that pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding bring to the body. The most common combination includes a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast surgery (either a lift, augmentation, or both), and liposuction to contour areas resistant to diet and exercise.
Because every woman's body is different, every Mommy Makeover I perform is different. There is no standard package. The plan is built entirely around your anatomy, your goals, and your life.
This is one of the most common questions I hear, and the honest answer is: it depends on what changed.
Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin and muscles significantly. For many women, the abdominal muscles separate during pregnancy, a condition called diastasis recti. No amount of exercise will repair separated muscles. That requires surgery. Similarly, stretched or loose skin cannot be tightened through diet or exercise alone. A tummy tuck addresses both — repairing the muscle wall and removing excess skin to restore a flatter, firmer abdominal contour.
After pregnancy and breastfeeding, many women experience a loss of volume, a change in breast shape, or increased drooping (ptosis). Some women lose significant fullness at the top of the breast. Others find that their breasts sit lower than they once did.
Depending on your anatomy and goals, the options include:
During your consultation, I evaluate your breast tissue, skin quality, and nipple position to determine which approach will give you the most natural, balanced result.
This is a question I am glad women ask, because timing matters.
I typically recommend waiting until you are confident your family is complete before pursuing a Mommy Makeover. A subsequent pregnancy after a tummy tuck can stretch the repaired muscle wall and skin again, potentially reversing results. That said, becoming pregnant after a Mommy Makeover is not dangerous — it simply may affect your outcomes.
If you are not sure whether your family is complete, we can have an honest conversation about timing and what makes the most sense for you.
Age alone is rarely a disqualifying factor. What matters more is your overall health, your healing capacity, and your goals. I have cared for women in their 50s who were excellent surgical candidates. I have also had consultations with younger women for whom the timing was not right for other reasons.
A thorough medical evaluation during your consultation helps determine whether you are a good candidate, regardless of age.
This is where I believe in complete honesty, because recovery is real and it requires planning.
Most patients take two weeks off from work and daily responsibilities. During the first week, you will need help — with your children, with driving, with basic tasks. By weeks three and four, most women are moving more comfortably and resuming light activity. Strenuous exercise is typically cleared around six weeks post-operatively.
The key is planning your support system in advance. Recovery goes significantly smoother when you are not trying to manage everything on your own.
In the right hands, yes, it should look entirely natural. My goal is never a result that announces itself. It is a result that simply makes you look and feel like the best version of yourself.
My background in fine arts, including study at the Lorenzo de' Medici Institute in Florence, shapes the way I approach proportion, balance, and aesthetic refinement. Every decision I make in the operating room is guided by what will look harmonious on your specific body.
With a conversation.
A consultation at the Antony Institute is not a commitment. It is an opportunity to ask every question you have been holding onto, understand your options, and leave feeling informed rather than overwhelmed.
This May, consultations for Mommy Makeover are $50 off. If you have been quietly wondering whether this is something you could do, let this be your sign to find out.
